I can’t remember a previous year where so many Oscar nominees are adaptations of books. In the best picture category: Arrival is based on Ted Chiang’s short story, The Story of Your Life; Fences is based on the play by August Wilson found in this anthology; Hidden Figures is based on Margot Lee Shetterly’s biography of three important women in the space race; and Lion is adapted from Saroo Brierley’s memoir A Long Way Home.
In other categories, there are many films of note. Up for sound mixing is 13 Hours : The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, based on the book 13 hours : the inside account of what really happened in Benghazi by Mitchell Zuckoff, with members of the Annex Security Team. In the best foreign film category, A Man Called Ove, based on the book of the same title, is nominated. Silence, nominated for best cinematography, is from Silence: A Novel by Shūsaku Endō.
