In Jackson, Mississippi, in 1962, there are lines that are not crossed. With the civil rights movement exploding all around them, three women start a movement of their own, forever changing a town and the way women--black and white, mothers and daughters--view one another.
Mississippi during the 1960s: Skeeter, a Southern society girl, returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends' lives and a small Mississippi town upside down when she decides to interview the black women who spent their lives taking care of prominnent southern families. Abileen, Skeeter's best friend's housekeeper, is the first to open up, to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community.
