Custer in the News
In Monroe County and throughout the United States

(Monroe Commercial, November 8, 1877; p.1, c.3)

If you have any spare change that you would like to put into a monument for Custer, the dashing brown haired cavalry hero who went down before overwhelming odds at the Little Big Horn, the opportunity is now presented. Shortly after his death a universal desire was expressed that a monument should be erected to his memory. The New York Herald announced that subscriptions for the purpose would be received at its office, and in a few weeks $4,051.20 were subscribed by the admirers of the dead hero and his comrades.

This sum has been transferred to the hand of Mr. August Belmont, the banker. Since that time the remains of Gen. Custer have been removed to their final resting place at West Point, and now await the monument that shall testify the love and admiration of the American people for his heroic character. The project requires but a little stimulus to make it a success.

The Herald says that a few thousand dollars in addition to the amount already subscribed will assure the completion of the work, and it suggests the names of Mr. Agustus Belmont, Gen. J.H. Schofield, Gen. W.S. Hancock, Mr. William Cullen Bryant, and Mr. Thurlow Weed as a committee to receive further contributions and make such arrangements as in their judgement they may deem wise. The Courier (Saginaw) seconds their motion and hopes the American people will show in their treatment of the dead their admiration of the heroic deeds of the living. (Saginaw Courier)

We are glad something is being done toward raising a monument to the dead hero, over his grave, and that the effort is likely to succeed. But might we modestly enquire what has become of the Michigan Custer Monument Association?
