While visiting the BIG quilt show in Paducah, Kentucky, Kathy saw the pattern for this quilt in a vendors display and decided that this was something she wanted to make. It was a block of the month, which means a new block arrives once a month and you should complete that one before the next one arrives. Well as life has a way of happening to us all her blocks took longer than expected to complete. One of the blocks she lost and had to track down the vendor to get a replacement. But, as all good things finally come together, she finally finished the hand appliqué and had Ellen Donnelly hand quilt her quilt. While Ellen was working on this quilt it even took a trip to California and back!
This quilt has been shown at Sauder Village and usually hangs in the hallway at Kathy’s home.
The absolute beauty of this quilt is in the details. Kathy used many different fabrics to achieve a life-like look and she really succeeded! Enjoy the close up photos of the detail that will amaze you.

The Ellis Reference and Information Center
has initiated a new program that will showcase the work of area quilters each month. This branch of the Monroe County Library System has two small study rooms that can be reserved by the public. The room closest to the river was named the River Room, and the room with the staff quilt was called the Quilt Room.. When the building underwent extensive remodeling in 1999-2000 the staff felt they had been through an experience and wanted to mark their triumph of working under adverse conditions while hammers pounded and saws buzzed. Each member working at the library at that time contributed a piece of fabric that they felt represented themselves and library staff put the quilt together. A commemorative book accompanies the quilt with fabric swatches and the name of each contributor. Many people on staff found it was like a game to figure out who contributed which piece of fabric. Just who was it that contributed that Christmas material?
In an effort to highlight the work of area quilters the staff quilt will be given a rest and members of the Monroe Quilt Guild will be supplying a different quilt each month for display. There is no limit on the size of the quilt that may be displayed and the quilt does not need a sleeve for it to be hung. Since the Monroe area artists already contribute original paintings for spot shows at the library the idea has now been extended to the art work of the quilt.. A new quilt will go up on the first of each month.
