Our Internet provider, Merit Networks, Inc., has reached a decision to discontinue dial-in services to Monroe County Library System patrons along with other institutions effective Monday, July 2, 2007. As a result dial-in service will no longer be available to Monroe County Library System users beginning on that date. This includes library support for home dial-in services.
Your current Monroe County Library System email address will remain active until December 31, 2007 to allow you time to migrate to another email service. We are willing to forward your mail to a new address during this time to make the transition easier. To arrange for this, please send an email message to email@example.com and be sure to include your new email address. No new email accounts will be created as of February 12, 2007.
In recent years there has been a significant increase in the availability of broadband Internet services in Monroe County. Ten years ago dial in access was the most prevalent means of access for home users as well as schools and libraries. That has changed due to a number of factors. Merit recently notified us that they have reached a decision that it is no longer affordable or practical for them to continue dial-in service. They reported that the number of dial-in lines peaked in 2002 at 14,000. Today the count is just over 4,000.
The Monroe County Library System is not recommending a specific service or provider for your Internet connectivity. You may want to contact other Internet service providers in your area. Yellow page listings are grouped under "Internet-On-line Service Providers". Be sure to confirm with the new provider that you can access the Internet through a local (not long distance) call.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this change may cause. Your support of this library service over the past decade is appreciated.
