Bygones of Monroe:

(Monroe Democrat, March 26, 1891, p1c2)

The Carleton Cheese Factory Co. composed of the firm of Edwards & Adams, Messrs. C.M. Strong, and J. Scype has its factory about completed and expect to begin work by April 1st. Mr. C.M. Strong, an experienced dairyman from Fairfield, will superintend the business. The company proposes to pay cash and offers 80 cts. per hundred pounds of April milk. This is said to be equal to 24 cts. per pound for butter. This price for butter is obtained but by a comparatively few farmers; and with the difference in trouble in selling milk, and making butter it would seem to be a great thing for all who keep cows and sell milk. The dairy business is becoming one of the industries of the country and wherever a cheese factory has been started and run by competent men the industry has proven a success.
