Dundee (September 28, 1833)

S.VanNest has laid out a village which he proposes to call by the name of Dundee, and which he will soon have duly recorded, according to law. It is located immediately on the banks of the river Raisin, in the Township of Summerfield, Monroe county, at a point where the LaPlaisance road, connecting Lake Erie with the Chicago road, crosses said river, about midway between Tecumseh, the county seat of Lenawee, and Monroe, and but 14 miles distant from each on the route of the new road.

A new territorial road is contemplated from Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County, to the flourishing town of Vistula, on the Maumee River, which will leave Dundee 18 miles from Vistula, and about the same distance from Ypsilanti. The place, from it commanding position, the excellence of its water privileges, the fertility of the soil, and its abundance of timber, cannot fail to eventually becoming one of the most important inland towns in Michigan.

The land about it is high and dry, the water in the river moves rapidly, and there is every indication of a country as healthy as any other in the west. There is no point on the Raisin where a greater water power can readily be obtained, or where an extensive manufacturing business could be established with better success. Already a first-rate saw mill, a grist mill, and a pail manufactory are in successful operation, and the introduction of other kinds of machinery is contemplated.
