Bygones of Monroe:

(Monroe Commercial, September 6, 1878, p5c2)

The Hawks of Erie visited Monroe Aug. 30th to play a match game of ball with the Monroes of that place. We are told that the game took place on the new fairgrounds, with about 150 spectators present. The Hawks left Erie with the intention of having a good time with the Monroe boys, and since they came back, they have a great deal to say about their having been so well used by the Monroes in the line of eatables etc., but we notice that very little is said about the game, and we are informed that there is a good cause for the Hawks to keep silent, as the score stood better than three to one in favor of the Monroes. The game lasted about three hours.

We also noticed a mistake in stating that the Hawks were beaten better than three to one in favor of the Monroes. If the mistake originated from us we are happy to correct it for the score stood little better then two to one only in favor of the Monroes. We are always ready to give the Hawks all the credit they are entitled to.
