MONROE MARRIAGES

Monroe seems to be one of those cities that is to be doomed to have undeserved and undesired notoriety thrust upon it. Just about recovering from muskrat banquet "fame", she is again being placed before the residents of neighboring states as a matrimonial hot bed. Since the electric line is in operation, penny-hungry correspondents of Detroit and Toledo papers have gone to great length classifying this city as the Gretna Green of south-eastern Michigan, they being guilty of about two articles apiece every year, until people of those cities have formed an idea that every interurban car brings candidates for matrimony and the peace or a cessation lately in this kind of reading matter and a permanent relief was hoped for, but now comes some anonymous individual, who cares more for a dollar or two than for the cities name, and runs a paid advertisement in a Toledo paper, extolling Monroe's railroad facilities and its merits as a place "where the knot can be tied without publicity" and offering to complete all arrangements for consummation the transaction. No name is given-only the post office box number.
