Bygones of Monroe:

15th Michigan Regiment, Soldier Werther & Wife

In the 15th Michigan Regiment was a soldier by the name of Werther who owns a small farm in London, Monroe Co., Mich., which he left to fight for the Union.  His faithful wife, a healthy, good looking woman, followed him step for step upon the dangerous and troublesome road.  When troops under Gen. Grant were surprised near Pittsburg Landing, and the 15th Michigan Regiment came into one of the bloodiest engagements, no words nor prayers could induce the woman to retire but a moment, and while her clothes were riddled by bullets and a cannon ball tore a large piece from her dress, she remained firm.  When the wounded began to get plentier and the bandages less, she tore strips from her dress and dressed the wounded soldiers with them.  Her husband was wounded too, and both arrived here last Wednesday, together with a large number of sick and wounded.  They were brought to the hospital on Lock Street, where Werther is taken care of.  But Mrs. Cadwell the faithful nurse of the sick took Mrs. Werther, who was in a very exhausted state to her home and took care of her.  They at once procured new dresses, as she virtually had nothing left but rags.  She has recovered some since.  Might some of our fair ladies take it into their hands to procure the most needy articles for her, as she lost everything on that dreadful day.  She and her husband desire to return to their home as soon as his wound will permit him to move but have no means at all to fulfill their desire.  Mrs. Caldwell lives at No. 317 Pine Street.
