Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources
Free Fishing Weekend – June 12-13, 2010

According to the Department of Natural Resources, Michigan offers more than 3,000 miles of shoreline along the Great Lakes, 36,350 miles of rivers and streams, and more than 11,037 inland lakes. With this much access to water, it is only natural that fishing would be a popular pastime.
On June 12-13, 2010, Michigan’s DNR will allow free fishing on its inland waters and Great Lakes. Whether a resident of Michigan or not, fishing license fees will be waived. For more information about the free fishing weekend, fish, or fishing, check out Michigan’s DNR website.

Follow up a free weekend of fishing with a free program about fishing at the Ellis Reference and Information Center on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.

Make a Splash (Softly) – Great Lakes Steelhead Fishing features Kenneth R. Jaynes, local author of An Expert’s Guide to Great Lakes Steelhead Fishing: Methods, Tactics, & Strategies.  A successful steelhead fisherman, Ken will instruct participants in the art of Great Lakes Steelhead fishing. He will discuss all aspects of fishing for steelhead, including the best equipment to use, productive streams within a 3-hour drive, and a variety of successful methods. Learn how to “play the fish” and how the acronym A FISH’N and other triggers can affect the number of strikes steelhead will attempt. After the program, Ken will sell and sign copies of his book. For more information about the program, visit the library’s Calendar of Events.
