Just in Time for the Holiday Season!
Shopping for Healthy Stuff:
Check out Healthystuff.org to find out about the safety of the products on the market; products that may be on many holiday shopping lists. Healthystuff.org researches “toxic chemicals in everyday products” such as:
Learn about chemicals that are considered toxic, as well as reform efforts to update the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act on the Safer Chemicals Healthy Families website. Legislation to update the Act is currently being considered.
Gift Card Alert:
Still hanging on to unused gift cards from last holiday season? Thinking of buying gift cards for everyone on your list this year?
Beware—many gift cards expire after a certain time period, and some card companies have created hidden fees that deplete the unused balance over time. State government budgets even have the ability to profit from unused balances through a process called “escheat.”
In August, 2010, new legislation called The Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act will offer protection from the sneaky ways gift and credit card companies cheat holders of their money, but it will not be in time for the 2009 holiday buying season. Be sure to be informed about expiration dates and what will happen to unused balances before you buy.
