George A. Custer Symposium – The Civil War Years

Sponsored by the Little Big Horn Associates, the Monroe County Historical Museum, and the Monroe County Library System,
Morning sessions will be held at the Ellis Library and Reference Center

There will be a book sale during the Symposium with the proceeds supporting the Lawrence A. Frost Collection.


 

About the Presenters

Mr. Patrick Falci

Re-enactor and historical advisor, Patrick Falci, will be returning to Monroe this year.  He is known for his portrayal of General Ambrose Powell Hill in the movie Gettysburg.  He was the historical advisor for Ron Maxwell’s movie God’s and Generals.  Since the making of the movie he has spent over 20 years traveling throughout the country enlightening the public about “Lee’s Forgotten General”.  Mr. Falci has appeared in major motion pictures, made for TV movies and documentaries.  He has been historical advisor for works by director and screen writer Ron Maxwell, Tom Berenger and author Jeff Shaara.  Patrick sits on the Advisory Council for the National Civil War Museum and has been a 3 time president of the Civil War Round Table of New York.  He has won many awards including Ft. A.P. Hill Commander’s Award for Excellence, the U.S. Army M.D. of Washington, DC, Commanding General’s Award, the U.D.C.J. Commanding General’s Award, the U.D.C.J. Davis Historical Gold Medals/S.U.V. Commander’s Award and the North Carolina Old North State Award. In 2002, Patrick was proclaimed an Honorary Texan by the Governor of Texas.

Mr. Steve Alexander

Actor, author, living historian, Steve Alexander has written, ridden, relived Custer’s life from minute details to the monumental moments more than any man who has ever portrayed the buckskin Cavalier, earning him the title, “Foremost Custer Living Historian” proclaimed by the United States Congress and is acknowledged by both the Michigan and Ohio Senates for his lifetime work.  He is the author of the 2010 quintessential biography G.A. Custer and the Little Big Horn and Believe in the Bold: Custer and the Gettysburg Campaign.  Steve has appeared in over forty docudramas and films as the General.  He has appeared as the General in many states including Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, Colorado and many more.  Steve is the recipient of the Custer Battlefield Historical and Museum Associations Editor’s Choice Award and duly honored by Joe Medicine Crow, Tribal Historian, bestowing the Crow name Ika’ Dieux Daka’, “Son of the Morning Star,” a name previously held by only one man, George Armstrong Custer.

Lorne Langley

Lorne Langley is a member of the Board of Directors of the Little Big Horn Associates.  He graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology in 1990 and has been an avid student of history for the past 30 years, focusing on George Armstrong Custer and 19th Century American Military History.  His published works include an article in the LBHA's Research Review journal entitled, "General Custer's Coup de Grace at the East Cavalry Field."

David Ingall

David Ingall is the former assistant director of the Monroe County Historical Museum and was the chairman of the monument dedication ceremony for the Monroe County Civil War Fallen Soldier’s Memorial. He is a sought-after Civil War speaker and tour guide. He’s a member of the Civil War Trust, Monroe County Civil War Round Table, and many other prestigious organizations.

Karin Risko

Karin Risko is the founder of Hometown History Tours, a local tour company that shows off the rich history of Detroit and southeast Michigan, including its Civil War and Underground Railroad history. A member of the Detroit Metro CVB, Karin is frequently called on by local professional and social organizations to speak on local history.

Rev. Vincent Heier

Rev. Vincent Heier is a retired Catholic priest from St. Louis, MO who has been fascinated with the Custer story since he was seven years old! He has spoken at Custer Week events in Monroe for the past few years. An avid collector, he is especially interested in the popular culture side of the story. He has contributed to a number of books and compiled a study of battlefield postcards for Arcadia Press. He is former chair of the Symposium Committee of the Custer Battlefield Museum Association and is currently on the board of the Little Big Horn Associates.
