Monroe County residents now have the opportunity to borrow print library materials from almost 300 academic and public libraries throughout Michigan using their MichiCard. The Monroe County Library System is a member of the MichiCard network, a statewide library card program, coordinated by the Library of Michigan. This program allows Michigan residents to borrow print materials from any other Michigan library participating in the MichiCard program. Current Monroe County Library System cardholders can add an endorsement sticker to their regular library card which will make them eligible to borrow from participating libraries. This is ideal for people on extended vacations who wish to use a local library but don't want to pay a non-resident fee or for people visiting other libraries for research or study who want to check out material. Any materials borrowed with MichiCard are subject to the lending library's circulation policy, however materials can be returned to any other participating library.
MichiCard does not replace interlibrary loan. The library will continue to search for materials from all over the country to meet the needs of Monroe County residents. Interlibrary loan is a popular service locating almost a thousand items a month from libraries outside of Monroe County for county residents. As with all library services, interlibrary loan is free to residents holding a valid library card.
Monroe County library users are urged to apply for their MichiCard at any branch of the Monroe County Library System by presenting a valid Monroe County Library System borrower's card.
