Michigan Free Legal Answers Service
MI Free Legal Answers is a new way for low-income residents of Southeast Michigan to get answers to their legal questions. It operates like an online legal aid clinic, and visitors to the site, that income-qualify (earning less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines), can post their questions, and have real Michigan lawyers provide an answer. The website is free and easy to use. It is designed to be mobile friendly. Visitors can log on from any device, at any time; all they need is an internet connection and an e-mail address.
The program began last year with a limited pilot in Genesee, Lapeer, and Saginaw counties, and recently expanded to the Metro Detroit/SE Michigan area. Attorneys are waiting to answer questions!
The Michigan Legal Help website is another great option for residents who need assistance solving legal issues. Supported by The Michigan State Bar Foundation and the Legal Services Corporation, it is designed for people handling legal problems without a lawyer. The website includes many Do-It-Yourself tools to help residents create court forms, including Do-It-Yourself divorce. It differs from MI Free Legal Answers in that it does not offer a spot for legal advice, but there is an area to search for a lawyer, community service or nearby Self-Help Center.
Used side-by-side, these two Michigan websites can be valuable resources
