Indexes to Resources at Monroe County Library System

  • Cemetery Book Index - an index of which cemeteries have had headstone inscription walkthroughs.
  • Images of Monroe County, MI Residents in the Armed Forces During World War II- During WWII, the Monroe Evening News reported on county residents serving in the Armed Forces. This index will lead researchers to the images and newspaper articles of those service men and women - 1942 Index
  • Index to The Way It Was feature by Byron Pilbeam, Sr. - This feature, written by Byron R. Pilbeam, Sr. ran in Dundee newspapers from late 1987 through 1999. It was a great source of local history as Mr. Pilbeam relayed information about the way things were when he was growing up in the 1930’s and 1940s. He wrote about events, local businesses, and a great number of individuals and families, making the feature a valuable tool that will allow genealogists to place an ancestor in a place at a specific time.
  • Itemizer Surname Index - Local Monroe newspaper that covered the societal happenings of the area. This index provides a list of surnames that appear within the Itemizer from the years 1877 - 1878
  • Marion Child's Interviews - Marion Child was a long time resident of Monroe. During the late 1950's and early 1960's she conducted interviews with the elderly residents of Monroe County. This particular Index allows access to the compilation of oral histories conducted by Mrs. Child between the years of 1956-1962.  The index provides researchers a variety of topics: surnames, businesses, cities, towns, schools, churches, ect. to choose from along with the page number the information is located on.
  • Monroe Commercial Obituaries - 1870, 1871, 1872, 1873, 1877, 1878, and 1879.
  • Monroe County Oral History - Over 200 oral histories of Monroe County residents have been accumulated through the combined efforts of Professor James DeVries of the Monroe Community College and the Monroe County Library System.
  • Monroe County Biography File Index - An index listing Monroe County Biographies from various sources.
  • Mt. Carmel Cemetery Index - Mount Carmel Cemetery is located in Toledo at the corners of Manhattan Blvd and Lagrange St. It is one of the oldest Catholic Cemeteries in Toledo with burials dating back to 1845 and continuing through to the present. This surname index will allow the researcher to locate the section and lot number of an ancestor more easily on the microfilmed records.
  • Our French-Canadian Ancestors Index - This 30-volume set, translated from the french Nos Ancetres, is a valuable resource for those researching their French-Canadian roots. It is based on the research of scholar Thomas J. Laforest. Each volume contains biographies for many of the French founding families of Canada. This index, alphabetical by surname, will lead researchers to the volume that will contain information about their families.
  • Paroisses de l’Ontario francais (French Parishes of Ontario) Index  - This index highlights the parishes that are included in the set of books, presented to the Ellis Library and Reference Center by the French Canadian Heritage Society of Michigan—Frenchtown Chapter. Names and dates of baptisms, marriages, and burials of parishioners are included in each book, and will be valuable to genealogists researching ancestors of French-Canadian origin.
  • St. Mary's Catholic Church Baptism Records Index 1830-1839  - Records are available at Ellis or the Historical Museum.
  • Cookbooks - Local cookbooks from churches and other groups can be valuable genealogical tools. Names of submitters will place an ancestor in a place at a specific time, and also give researchers an idea of how their ancestor spent time in that place.
  • Wood County Sentinel Obituaries - Newspaper from Bowling Green, Ohio. Obituaries from the years 1867 - 1876.
