Images from the George A. Custer Collection

Images from the George A. Custer Collection is a selection of images contained within the Lawrence A. Frost Collection of Custeriana located at the Ellis Library and Reference Center, in Monroe, Michigan.   The Frost Collection of Custeriana is a multi-media collection which focuses on the life and times of General George Armstrong Custer.

General George A. Custer was born December 5, 1839, in New Rumley, Ohio, and came to Monroe, Michigan, as a young boy to live with his older sister.  After graduating from West Point in 1861, he proved himself a daring soldier throughout the Civil War by playing prominent roles in several key battles including Gettysburg, Winchester and Five Forks.  On February 9, 1864, he returned to Monroe to marry Elizabeth Clift Bacon, daughter of Judge Daniel Bacon, at the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe.  Custer continued his military service into the Indian Wars where he would lose his life on June 25, 1876, at the infamous Battle of the Little Big Horn.

The Images from the George A. Custer Collection reflects a variety of photographic methods available during the 19th Century.  This collection includes carte de viste, daguerreotypes, and stereoscopic images.

The Lawrence A. Frost Collection was obtained from Monroe’s Custer historian, the late Dr. Lawrence A. Frost, in 1977.  Dr. Frost was a podiatrist by trade who spent his time out of the office studying the General’s life.  The collection continues to grow as General George A. Custer remains a colorful and intriguing part of American history.
