1000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Read it and Reap!

The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless.  Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant or toddler.  The goal is to have read 1,000 books before your little one starts kindergarten and help your child enter school ready to learn.  Become an advocate for literacy while bonding with your child.
  • Reading just 1 book a night will equal out to 365 books in a year.
  • That works out to 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years.
  • To make it easier, repeat books as many times as you like!
  • Let the Library help!  Ask a librarian about book recommendations, storytimes or expert reading tips.

There are so many great books to choose from! Check out the suggested reading list provided by 1000booksbeforekindergarten.org.

Promote lifelong reading habits and bond with your child!

The Monroe County Library System has free reading logs available to help you track your reading progress.  Watch your reading list grow and collect small prizes from the Library with each completed log.
  • Can’t make it to a branch?  Download a 1000 Book Reading Log.
  • iPhone users also can download the free app.
  • Log your reading any way possible – just have FUN doing it!

Celebrate Reading 1,000 Books

Once you and your child have completed the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge, your child’s name will be added to a book of your choice at the Monroe County Library System.  Your achievement will be hallmarked with a special commemorative book plate and included in the Library’s permanent collection for years to come.
