There are a number of film adaptations of books coming out this summer. One you may not be aware of is a teen novel called Everything, Everything by Nicola Yun. It’s about a girl with an immune disorder confined to her home who falls in love with the boy next door. The film of the same name releases May 19th as does Paint it Black based on the novel by Janet Fitch. A boyfriend of a woman from L.A. dies and she becomes enmeshed in a strange negative relationship with his mother.
And for those that enjoy irreverent children’s books and films, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: the Long Haul releases May 19th, based on the book of the same title and Captain Underpants: the first Epic movie open June 2nd. The film is based on the bestselling Captain Underpants series by Dav Pilkey.
For nonfiction fans, War Machine based on The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan by Michael Hastings opens May 26.
The oft-adapted Daphne Du Maurier is on the summer list. Her classic novel My Cousin Rachel is adapted for the first time and is releasing June 9th. An Englishman suspects his cousin Rachel is responsible for the death of his uncle. The Beguiled by Thomas Cullinan releases as a film June 23rd. This classic novel is about a wounded Union soldier who is cared for by the women at a Southern girl's school. He seduces both a teacher and a student.
For the literary-minded, Lady Macbeth opens on July 14. It’s based on the Russian novella Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. You can find it here in an anthology of Russian literature. A new bride trapped in an arranged marriage begins an affair with a stable hand.
The Dark Tower 1: the gunslinger releases August 4th based on Stephen King’s series.
One of the most anticipated movies is based on Jeannette Walls’ The Glass Castle, a memoir about the journalist/author’s extremely dysfunctional childhood. This inspiring story of overcoming adversity is coming out August 11th. It’s compelling reading.
A movie based on the manga series Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba will open August 25th. Tulip Fever based on the book of the same name by Deborah Moggach also opens on this date. It chronicles the tulip trade in 17th century Amsterdam through the story of one family. This global trading of tulips rivaled the gold markets of today. It’s a fascinating read.
I hope you find a title or two for your TBR pile….
