There are a number of thrillers coming out this spring and summer for all us Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train fans. One that has a lot of buzz is B.A. Paris’ Breakdown, releasing in July 2017. Cass doesn’t bother to stop at a broken down car on a rainy night only to find out later the driver has been murdered. A shocking conclusion is promised!
Also publishing in July, Final Girls by Riley Sager promises to please those who like their thrillers more graphic. Quincy Carpenter went on vacation with five friends and came back alone. She’s the only survivor of a massacre and now enters a strange little group no one wants to belong to composed of women who survived. They are dubbed by the press, “the Final Girls” and include Lisa, who survived an attack on her sorority, and Sam, who survived an attack by the “Sack Man” during her shift at the Nightlight Inn. Everyone finally starts to move on, and that’s when it gets really strange….
And, for those who like their thrillers less gruesome -- more in the vein of Mary Higgins Clark, this May read Hallie Ephron’s You’ll Never Know, Dear. Hallie is the sister of Nora Ephron and she writes just as well. Forty years ago, four-year-old Janey went missing from her front yard, along with a one-of-a-kind porcelain doll. Every year, on the anniversary of her disappearance, Janey’s mother places an ad, along with a photograph of the doll, offering a
generous reward for its return. There are never any responses, except this year, when the doll returns and triggers a series of sinister events. Sounds creepy …like a classic gothic novel!
Are you more of a true crime reader? Try The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich releasing in May. Kirkus Reviews says this title is "“An accomplished literary debut…an absorbing narrative about secrets, pain, revenge, and, ultimately, the slippery notion of truth…A powerful evocation of the raw pain of emotional scars.”
Great news! A prequel is coming out for one of my favorite books to read at Halloween. The Rules of Magic, Alice Hoffman’s prequel to Practical Magic, will be published in October. It’s just in time for Halloween 2017. It’s too soon to place a hold, but check our catalog in a few months.
