Summer is the perfect time for a family drama novel. The Secrets We Keep by Kate Hewitt will not disappoint. When Tessa arrives at the little house by the lake with her two children, it is an escape. The rental house may be a bit small, but it's theirs for the summer. A place to hide... However, their isolation is disrupted by the family from the big house next door--three children and their glamorous mother Rebecca, who seems determined to invite Tessa into their lives.... Our staff member said, “It delved into female friendships and family issues with a bit of suspense and it kept me reading.”
If you want a fun break from thrillers this summer, try Sarah Skilton’s Fame Adjacent. It has a full-on rom-com plot: child star Holly meets Thom at an internet addiction clinic. Various shenanigans ensue and soon Holly and Thom are road-tripping together to get her to the televised anniversary reunion of the cast of her childhood television show…the humor was pretty sharp, and Holly and Thom were worth rooting for. All in all, a fun read.
If you are a book lover, you’ll enjoy this sweet title, The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan. It is about a librarian in England who loses her job due to funding cuts and the closing of her branch. Nina has a knack for finding the perfect book for every person and she won't stop using her expertise. She decides she is going to pack up her belongings and move to someplace that needs books. She does and creates a mobile bookstore. The DU staff member who recommended this title said, “I read this around the same time our bookmobile was introduced…so this book was close to my heart.”
Our last pick this week, is an update on a classic. Before Green Gables by Budge Wilson is a prequel to the classic L.M. Montgomery Anne of Green Gable series. It's about Anne Shirley's life before she arrived at Green Gables. Wilson tells Anne's story using the wonderful, upbeat tone that L. M. Montgomery created in the classic series. Poor Anne had some pretty tragic events in her life. Through it all, her determination to make the best of everything she endured was amazing…pick up this title if you're looking to reinforce the power of positivity.
