
Early Days of Schools in Monroe
1819 – First school held on the south side of the river in a brick building.
1827 – Michigan Legislation authorized townships to employ schoolmasters who were paid by the
parents of children who attended school.
1828 – Monroe County organized the first district school on Michigan, the Bridge School.
1838 – Monroe University, became a branch of the University of Michigan
1845 – St. Mary Academy founded as an elementary school
1849 – Young Ladies’ Seminary
1849 – Trinity Lutheran School, originally held in basement of church
Mid 1850’s – Boys and Young Men’s Academy
1857 – Union School
1889 – Macomb School
1912 – Boyd School
1914 – St. Mary’s College
