Dear Brothers, Companions and Friends:
In the acceptance of the beautiful and elegant sword presented by you, on the very eve of departure from your midst, I had not time to express to you my grateful thanks, and do not think that from the fullness of my heart I could have uttered a dozen words, without an outburst of feeling. I am, therefore doubly thankful to you, for your generous evidence of continued friendship and esteem, and will give you this Sentiment:
May this sword be ever the defense of our country, our institutions, and your humble servant and friend.
In Camp Meridian Heights, Sept. 10, ‘61
Capt. James Darrah
Co. D, 7th Reg’t, Mich. Infantry.
N.B.—To the ladies of Monroe, I feel personally under many obligations, for their untiring efforts to render comfort to my company, and many, many times will my noble boys bless them with a grateful heart. J.D.
